The IB Diploma Programme at Richmond Secondary School is an academically rigorous, internationally recognized program that requires students to undertake coursework during Grades 11 and 12.
It has a long history at Richmond Secondary School, having been approved by the Richmond School Board in 1984, and located at was then known as Richmond Senior Secondary School. Philosophically, our IB Diploma Programme is inclusive, diverse and welcoming: it is open to all students in Richmond and the Lower Mainland.
Despite the fact that the IB Diploma Programme exposes students to numerous and complex academic demands, in many ways its chief goal is quite simple: to teach students how to learn in any area of knowledge that they choose to pursue.
Over the years we have found that the chief factors that distinguish our very, very best students from our best students do not involve content mastery at all: maturity, responsibility, diligence, perseverance, and humility.
Indeed we have consistently found that our very, very best students are active in the school community and the community-at-large prior to enrolling in the IB Diploma Programme and remain active in their communities after enrolling in the IB Diploma Programme.
This means that rather than being expected to stop participating in school teams, main-stage theater productions, musical concerts, clubs and other interests, IB Diploma Candidates at Richmond Secondary School are expressly expected to continue to pursue these endeavors, as they contribute significantly to so much personal, social, emotional and cognitive growth.
As always, it is critical to keep in mind that the IB Diploma Programme simply represents one Graduation pathway available to students at Richmond Secondary School and that achieving academic excellence in the provincial Dogwood Graduation Program is also an exceptionally challenging undertaking.
